La Pacheca Collective: As She Tells It

The documentary play depicts the experiences of several women during the Spanish Civil War, through interviews conducted in Valencia and Bilbao that examine the repression, exile and violence of the conflict.

Created by La Pacheca Collective, this work highlights the voices of women who experienced the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath. Through interviews with women from Valencia and Bilbao, it reconstructs their accounts of life in shelters during bombings, their prison experiences, the reprisals they faced, exile, and mass graves. The piece combines video, live performance, and an interactive approach with the audience.

Nominated for Best New Playwright at the Max Awards 2021, the project has been showcased at several international festivals. It reflects both the personal stories of the interviewees and the historical context of Spain under Franco’s regime. The piece encourages reflection not only on past events but also on current conflicts by connecting these testimonies to contemporary wars.

Written and directed by Bea Insa, As She Tells It has received acclaim for its educational approach and its ability to convey a raw yet essential narrative. With contemporary scenic design and an experimental format, the play challenges spectators to question the meaning of historical memory and violence, urging urgent reflection on war and its societal consequences.
